The Conch Republic

Text by Kathleen Walls

When the United States government set up roadblocks on the Keys' Highway tying up traffic for hours. Key Westers retaliated by "declaring their independence." They waged a mock war by throwing coconuts and named themselves "The Conch Republic."

It was all tongue and cheek but you still find evidence of that banana republic all over Key West. After all, they really do have a different outlook on life there. Here are some photos that look at that laid back lifestyle found only in Key West.

Someone once said "It's not the character of Key West. It's the characters in Key West. Just looking at some of the vehicles there convince you that these are a different breed..

The island city abounds in museums. The view below was taken from the tower located in the Wrecker's Museum

The picture to the right is one of the permanant inhabitants of Mallory Square . The sinister fellow below is found at the aquarium. The oldest attraction in Key West.

Most art museums wouldn't let a dog past the front door. Not so with The Dog Art Gallery in Key West. Not only does their art portray man's best friend , he is actually welcome to come in and enjoy a snack and a bowl of water while his owners views the art.

Key West has a proud relationship with the fast clipper ships that crossed the oceans in days gone by. In fact they have their very own flagship, The Western Union. You can sail on her daily and relive the days of the tall ships.

Located just next to the Western Union pier is Schooner Wharf Bar, one of the most fun spots in Key West. Don't be surprised if you find yourself sitting next to a dog at the bar. Four legged visitors are welcome here too.

Before sunset, be sure to stroll on down to Mallory square for the greatest free show on earth, Sunset at Mallory Square. While you await nature's performance, you can enjoy the performances by all the entertainers who congregate there every evening.

If you're lucky you might spot a sailboat crossing the setting sun.
