It's always fun to know the history of a place you visit. When you stay at Cuscowilla at Lake Oconee Golf Resort, the story goes way back before the dawn of written history. Native people made their home here far back into prehistoric times. The first settlers recorded as dwelling here were a tribe of the Creek Nation. They built their town on the banks of a river they called the  Okoni, meaning "The Great Water." They named their village Cuscowilla.

Early native people settled here for much the same reasons modern visitors come today. A river filled with fish and lush landscape filled with wildlife. They could live in a beautiful environment  and eat well.  These things are still part of Cuscowilla albeit in a totally different content. Modern visitors fish the lake for fun and view the wildlife as natural beauty not food.

Lake Oconee itself was not here when  the Creeks settled.  It was created in 1979 by Georgia Power. It is the second largest lake in Georgia and because of its location,  less than an hour and a half east of Atlanta and west of Augusta, it has become a serious recreation destination.  The 19,050 acre lake with its 374 miles of shoreline was created when Georgia Power built Wallace Dam which separates Lake Oconee from Lake Sinclair. Lake Oconee is not used for flood control and remains stable all year. Florida power makes sure all residents meet the requirement s  to keep the lake looking pristine.

Another advantage the modern visitor has is we can stay in luxurious Cuscowilla at Lake Oconee Golf Resort. Even if you don't play golf, you will love this place. You have lots of choices in style of lodging. If you want the feel of a private home, you could choose the Golf Cottages located between the 2nd and 18th fairways. These homes are built to harmonize with the natural surroundings and feel like they grew there among the trees.  They are solid granite  and cedar shingles, hardwood floors and exposed yellow pine beams. All have all the amenities of a upscale home, full kitchen with all appliances you could wish for, comfortable living and dining area, multi-storied for privacy, fireplace and outdoor deck help make these cottages oh so comfy.

Another good choice is the Lake Villas. These are also large granite and cedar shake homes but are built along the lake so each villa has a porch overlooking Lake Oconee. They too have all the features of the cottages. If you want the feel of a hotel style accommodation, the Lodge Villas is for you. The lodge gives the feel of a Mediterranean holiday resort. They offer accommodations ranging from a studio room with two queen beds to a Villa suite with full kitchens and living areas. The Lodge is set up so you can have either golf course or lake views.
